Communist capitalist

Ok, this is a weird day. I’ve had a bid for that page, and I’ve also discovered the joys of FreeCycling.

It’s really the utimate contrast. Good old eBay is the holy grail of capitalism, where anything and everything is for sale, and at bargain prices. And FreeCycling is communism in action.

I’m torn, ‘cos I’d really like FreeCycling to take off, but eBay is such fun!

I’m assuming you know what eBay is. I bet you haven’t heard of FreeCycling, though. The principle is really simple, if you’ve got something you don’t want, rather than throwing it away in a landfill, offer it on a FreeCycling message board, and see if anyone else can use it. While you’re there, you can also ask for stuff that you want, that other people may have in the back of a cupboard or wherever.

Most FreeCycle groups insist that nothing be offered in exchange, and that the idea is just to make sure that stuff doesn’t go to waste. Superb! In our disposable culture there’s so much stuff we use for only a short time, then we forget it. Wouldn’t it be better to enrich someone else’s life by passing it on? Who knows, it could become that natural way of doing things one day.

“Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…”

Ok, the Hippy broke into song….time to go to bed.
